Some People Call It Shoegaze

Adam Lukas sits on his invisible stool.

I love to hear a song for the first time and try to pick out the band's influences. "Let's see, I can hear some Smashing Pumpkins, definitely Jane's Addiction (but not Porno For Pyros) and wow, that jingle-jangle on the guitar is very Byrds-ish." I love it even more when I find out I'm right about my instincts.

Such was the case with Chicago's Apteka (not to be confused with a Polish rock band of the same name).

Apteka played South By Southwest this year and did some recording in the studio while in Austin. Until that album comes to fruition, you can download their EP for free (it totally shreds) at their MySpace page. You'll also find a music video there. The band made it by splicing together scenes from other people's videos. It came out rather cool because there's a lot of young hotties in it.

The lone, mellow stand-out on their EP is a cover of... dare I say... the Thompson Twins' "If You Were Here." If you've never heard TT's version, I hope you don't, unless you like Moog keyboards. Apteka does the song justice however, with singer Adam Lukas' voice so soft and smooth, I could swear he sang The Association's "Never My Love" (minus the harmonies) back in the day:
