I'm far from being a Canuck, but I did spend three years working at a Canadian airline and have spent about 3 total months of my life in Canada, so that's gotta count for something. Right?
Oh, and The Tragically Hip are one of my favorite bands. And Gordon Downie's first solo album, Coke Machine Glow, is still my favorite album of this decade. And I've written songs that feature the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, the town of Gimli, and Rue St Denis in Montreal. Someday, I will write a song about the Saskatchewan Roughriders, particularly their first Grey Cup winning team from 1966. Don't hold your breath on that one, though.
If it wasn't for Iceland, Canada would be my favorite country. Sorry Canada - you'd be number 1 if it wasn't for one thing: I got laid when I was in Iceland. I've never gotten laid in Canada. Next time, hopefully.
Oh, there's one other thing keeping Canada from being my favorite country: the Caesar. That drink is fucking disgusting.
Anyway, in celebration of Canada Day, here's a very brief mix featuring some of my Canuckian favorites. It is a bit more Vancouver-y than I expected - and not even close to being representative of all the great bands out there, but - you know - it's just a Mini mix tape.
Enjoy.
1: Destroyer - Modern Painters
2: The Paper Cranes - I'll Love You Until My Veins Explode
3: The Tragically Hip - Fireworks
4: Apostle Of Hustle - Cheap Like Sebastien
5: AC Newman - The Cloud Prayer
If you want some more Canadian goodness, there's a fine list of other Canada Day-related links at the very bottom of this page at Chromewaves.

When I first heard Hootie and the Blowfish sing "I Go Blind," I knew I heard the song before. Canada's own 5440 did the original and I had to pull out my cassette and listen to the original version. "Baby Ran" was 5440's biggest single. It's held up well over the years, better than Anne Murray's tits. Just some Canadien trivia for you.
I just looked up 5440 (54-40) on MySpace and they're still around and actually sound good.
Never heard of them - I'll have to check them out.
By the way, "Canadien" in your first comment: typo or French Canadian reference?
Neither. I used the Olde English spelling.
Definitely check 5440 out. Rather than good, they're sounding great.
I can only guess what enticing, controversial things you had to say in the comment that you deleted.
